Aims and scope

The Australian Journal of Artificial Intelligence Review (AJAIR) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that publishes research on the application of artificial intelligence in education, business, organisations and society. The journal welcomes empirical studies, systematic reviews, case studies and conceptual papers that connect AI theory with practice, from researchers in Australia, the Asia-Pacific, Africa and around the world.

Topics include AI in teaching, learning and assessment; AI in workforce development and corporate learning; AI adoption in organisations and small businesses; ethical, legal and governance aspects of AI; AI for social impact and sustainable development; and intelligent tutoring, adaptive systems and learning analytics.

Publication frequency: two issues a year, in May and November. Language: English. ISSN 2982-3323 (online).

Peer review

All research articles submitted to AJAIR undergo double-anonymous peer review: reviewers do not know the identity of the authors, and authors do not know the identity of the reviewers.

The editor first screens each submission for scope, originality, basic quality and similarity (see Plagiarism). Submissions that pass screening are sent to at least two independent reviewers with expertise in the subject. Reviewers are not from the authors' institutions and declare any conflict of interest before accepting.

Reviewers assess originality, methodological rigour, contribution to knowledge, clarity and ethical compliance, and recommend acceptance, minor revision, major revision or rejection. The handling editor makes the decision on the basis of the reviews; where reviewers disagree, a further reviewer may be invited. Authors receive the reviewers' comments with every decision. The target time from submission to first decision is eight weeks.

Manuscripts authored or co-authored by the Editor-in-Chief or any member of the editorial board are handled by another editor who has no conflict of interest, and the authoring editor has no access to the review process.

Open access

AJAIR is a fully open access journal. All articles are freely available to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search and link to the full text immediately on publication, without subscription or registration, in line with the Budapest Open Access Initiative definition of open access.

Copyright and licensing

Articles in AJAIR are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence (CC BY 4.0), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/. Authors retain copyright in their work without restriction and grant AJAIR the right of first publication. Anyone may share and adapt the work for any purpose, provided appropriate credit is given to the authors and the original publication in AJAIR is cited. This licence applies to all articles published in AJAIR since Volume 1 Issue 1.

Article processing charge and waivers

AJAIR charges no submission or review fee. An article processing charge (APC) of USD 100 is payable only after a manuscript has been accepted for publication. There are no other charges, including no charge for withdrawing a manuscript. The APC covers editorial handling, copyediting, typesetting, DOI registration with Crossref and long-term preservation.

Automatic waivers. The APC is waived in full where the corresponding author's primary affiliation is in a country or territory on the Research4Life Group A list, and reduced by 50 per cent (to USD 50) where it is on the Group B list. We use the lists published at https://www.research4life.org/access/eligibility/ on the date of submission. Authors should request the waiver when submitting.

Need-based waivers. Authors from any country may apply at submission for a full or partial waiver if neither they nor their institution or funder can pay. A short statement of need is sufficient. The Journal Manager decides within 10 working days.

Independence. Editors and reviewers are not told whether a waiver was requested or granted, and ability to pay plays no part in editorial decisions. Authors with funding for APCs are asked to use it. This policy applies to manuscripts submitted from 1 November 2026 and is reviewed each January.

Archiving and preservation

AJAIR content is preserved through the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN), which uses LOCKSS to keep secure, distributed copies of published content. Article metadata is registered with Crossref and available through the journal's OAI-PMH interface.

Plagiarism and similarity screening

All submissions are checked with Turnitin before peer review. Manuscripts with unattributed overlap, duplicate publication or self-plagiarism are rejected or returned to the authors for correction, and suspected misconduct is handled under the COPE flowcharts.

Publication ethics and malpractice

AJAIR follows the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) Core Practices and the Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing. Authors must submit original work, cite sources accurately, disclose all funding and conflicts of interest, and obtain ethics approval and informed consent for research involving human participants. Editors make decisions on academic merit alone and keep submissions confidential. Reviewers keep manuscripts confidential, declare conflicts and do not use unpublished material for their own work. Allegations of misconduct are investigated following COPE guidance.

Conflicts of interest

All authors, reviewers and editors must declare any financial, personal or professional interest that could influence, or appear to influence, their work. Declarations are recorded during submission and review. Editors and reviewers withdraw from any manuscript where a conflict exists.

Corrections and retractions

Errors that do not affect the conclusions are corrected through a published correction linked to the original article. Articles with serious errors, fabrication, plagiarism or unethical research are retracted following COPE guidelines; the retraction notice is published and linked to the article, which remains online and is clearly marked as retracted. Corrections and retractions are deposited with Crossref.

Complaints and appeals

Authors may appeal an editorial decision by writing to the Journal Manager within 30 days, explaining why the decision should be reconsidered. Appeals are reviewed by an editor not involved in the original decision. Complaints about the journal's processes are acknowledged within 7 days and handled by the Editor-in-Chief, or by another senior editor where the complaint concerns the Editor-in-Chief.

Use of generative AI

Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors. Authors who use AI tools for language editing, coding or analysis must describe that use in the methods or acknowledgements section and remain fully responsible for the content. Reviewers and editors must not upload manuscripts to public AI tools, to protect confidentiality.

Self-archiving

Authors may deposit any version of their article (submitted, accepted or published) in an institutional or subject repository, on a personal website or on academic networking sites, at any time and without embargo, provided the published version in AJAIR is cited with its DOI.

Authorship and data

Everyone listed as an author must have made a substantial contribution to the work and approved the final version; contributions are described in a short authorship statement. Authors are encouraged to share data and code in a public repository and to state where they can be found, or why they cannot be shared.

From Volume 2 Issue 2 onwards, each article page and PDF shows the dates of submission, acceptance and publication.
